Regional Emmy Winner: Technical Achievement

Ryan Simmons, MFA, is a digital media designer and documentary filmmaker with expertise in cinematography, video editing, and motion graphics. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Documentary Production from Wake Forest University, where he specialized in creating visually compelling narratives. Ryan’s work spans multiple platforms, blending technical skill with creative storytelling to engage and educate audiences.

 

At the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, Ryan develops innovative digital media strategies to enhance student engagement and learning. He has founded his own videography business, earned a Michigan Regional Emmy for editing and producing a children's show Weather Experience, and is producing his thesis film Reel Conversations, exploring mental health, family, and resilience. Driven by a passion for using media to inspire dialogue and meaningful change, Ryan is committed to storytelling that makes an impact.

Teaching Experience

Teaching Assistant - DOC724 Advanced Story Editing

In this role, I supported graduate students through lectures, tutorials, and individualized feedback focused on both creative and technical mastery. I prepared and graded assignments, led workshops on editing theory and practical application, and provided one-on-one guidance to reinforce advanced media production concepts. The course emphasized editing principles, storytelling structure, and hands-on proficiency in Adobe Premiere and media management. I also worked closely with the lead instructor to refine curriculum design, track student progress, and foster an inclusive learning environment that encouraged collaboration and critical thinking.

Teaching foundational skills in video editing, cinematography, and sound design. Led hands-on sessions covering camera operation, lighting techniques, and Adobe Premiere Pro, providing students with practical experience to apply course concepts.

The role emphasized combining technical skills with creative storytelling, fostering an inclusive environment where students could explore diverse perspectives. Encouraged teamwork and time management, guiding students in planning and executing their film projects effectively within the course timeline. This approach ensured students developed a solid understanding of both technical and creative aspects of media production.
